The Suburban Concrete Slab Reborn

Our first case study takes us to a typical suburban backyard in Austin, Texas. The homeowners, a young couple with two active dogs, had inherited a backyard dominated by a massive, 400-square-foot poured concrete patio. The concrete was a flat, dull gray, cracked in several places, and stained from years of grease drips from the barbecue grill. Because of the intense Texas sun, the patio was a blinding, blazing hot desert for most of the year, completely unused except as a pathway to the lawn.

The redesign, led by landscape architect Sarah Jenkins, was radical. Instead of patching the concrete, the team brought in a jackhammer and removed the entire slab.
